Potting a faux tree into an antique olive pot

  • ACHIEVING THE DESIRED LOOK

It's an elegant way to style your Olive Pot but it's often not without its challenges, for which the below guides present two possible options to help...

Is your pot opening not wide enough for the base of your faux plant to fit through?

Despite some Kiln pots being incredibly large, typically the openings of old Olive Pots are proportionately small (often under 20cm).

This is often a huge sticking point, but there is a way around it without needing to compromise on both the size of the faux tree nor the style + shape of the pot.

    CUT FROM ORIGINAL BASE

Start by removing the faux tree from the original plastic pot base. This will likely require the use of power tools

Keep as much length as possible – the trunk doesn’t have to be cut clean but trim the width of the plastic pot base until it is slim enough to fit through the Olive Pot opening

    REPLACEMENT BASE PREP

To raise the tree within the Olive Pot, create a level false base. The best pot filler to use should be heavy + sturdy: stones or sandbags are advised

Place the flexible pot liner inside + expand it open. Purchase flexible pot liners here

If needed, to sandwich the pot liner central within the Olive Pot, stuff down the sides with bubble wrap or brown paper

    RESTABILISING

Mix up the correct quantity of rapid-set cement

Place the now narrower tree base central within the wider pot liner

Pour in the cement + hold the faux tree in place as it sets

Tip: For a neat + tidy finish to the pot opening, cover with dried moss

    REPLACEMENT BASE PREP

With the base now as slim as possible, measure the diameter of the end

Take a tall, slim log that will fit through the opening of the Olive Pot. Hollow out the centre to slightly wider than the measurement of the trunk – best done using a drill with a flat wood drill bit

Position the tree inside of the hollow log + silicone into place if the tree is leaning
