  • KILN’S ANTIQUE POTTERY LAMP BASE ORIGINS

    Handmade, hand-picked + hand-finished

Formed from artisan made pottery through the late 19thC + early 20thC, each Kiln lamp is of antique age. With the majority originating from Turkey + across the Levant, Kiln’s pot lamp bases were hand thrown using traditional methods, shown through their charming irregular form which makes each lamp completely one-of-a-kind. Their terracotta bases are further enriched with character from their years of former use as pottery storing the likes of oil + water.

Being entirely of authentic age + each unique makes Kiln’s lamps particularly special. It is their naturally forming beautiful patina that draws me to select each clay pot to become a utterly timeless earthy + rustic table lamp.

Each antique pot chosen for the collections is then converted by hand for Kiln, here in England by a local independent specialist.

  • CREATING KILN’S UNIQUE LAMP COLLECTIONS

The conversion process that makes each lamp truly special

Not all antique pots are possible to convert into Kiln lamps.

For one, the shape + proportions of the pot have to work nicely as a lamp base. Then there is the opening of the pot to consider. With their naturally organic form, it is quite common for the pots to have an asymmetric opening which causes trouble when mounting circular brass discs to cap the pots. It is only possible to source these brass discs in certain diameters which further limits the potential for conversion.

The orientation of each lamp is carefully chosen to showcase the pot’s best side, occasionally it will be their age-worn markings naturally lending to a ‘front side’, this dictates the lamp’s wiring.

All in all, each step of the process has personal first-hand involvement to carefully curate the most beautiful lamps possible. It is this, alongside the rich historic origins of the pottery that make for such exclusive + special table lamp collections.

  • LIMITED AVAILABILITY OF THE COLLECTIONS

    Not to be missed

Kiln lamps will always remain rare + in limited numbers as it takes a very specific list of factors to align to source pots possible for conversion.

  • THE AESTHETICS

Unlike their mass-produced rustic style or stone lamp counterparts, Kilns earthenware lamps are naturally weathered + of authentic antique age. These terracotta table lamp bases have an earthy, textured surface, reflective of their artisan beginnings + signs of the rich life they formerly led.

Each has an irregular patina differing in tone, from stone + sand tones to stronger terracotta’s + deep, rich red clays. Suited to interiors that have a focus on natural materials, + characterful homes such as farmhouses + barn conversions to country cottages + manor houses.

Lamps range from unglazed terracotta to some with hints of coloured glazed ceramic. Base shapes tend to either be handless or have two handles in the classic urn + amphora styles.

While no two are quite the same, it is occasionally possible to create similar pairings for a symmetrical scheme.

  • LAMP FINISHING DETAILS

Most fittings are finished in dark antique brass, on occasion,
a more rustic finish or cooler toned metal will be used. Lamp bases are finished with a felt pad to protect furniture.

  • COMPLIMENTING LAMP SHADES
